ANGEL SPIRITUALIST CENTRE
WYMERING MANOR – A PARANORMAL EVENING

The Angel Spiritualist Centre recently held a paranormal investigation at Wymering Manor – one of the UK’s most haunted buildings, and one of the oldest buildings in Portsmouth.
The history of Wymering can be traced back to 1085, when the first occupant , William Maudit took residency, and it remained occupied until 2006, when it was a hostel for the YMCA. It now stands empty, awaiting major renovation and repair.
Our team of investigators, led by Angel Centre mediums Wayne, Jay and Chris, stayed overnight in the manor, and discovered some astounding examples of spirit activity, including:
A walkie-talkie left alone on a table in the music room suddenly sprang to life, buzzing as if receiving messages despite being the only one in the building – its partner was switched off as the battery was flat.
A chair in the music room was tipped back onto two legs – we straightened it and replaced it on all four legs, and it later gave a repeat performance, tipping back onto two legs with a loud bang.
Perfume was smelt in the main bedroom, and a chair was moved from the doorway into the centre of the room. In the same room, a woman was clearly seen sitting by the window – other investigators have confirmed a similar sighting.
Many children were seen, heard and felt at Wymering, and the smell of nappies was detected in the attic space – we were later told this was at one time a nursery. We felt that the children of Wymering were not treated well, and the spirit of one young girl in particular was trapped and unable to pass over. We held a service for her, and helped her pass to the light.
Many taps, raps and bangs were heard, the door to the men’s toilet was heard to bang despite everyone present being in the room next door, and a child’s toy flute was thrown

out of a cupboard where it had been placed as a trigger object.
One very dominant energy was William, whom we believe to be William Smith, living at Wymering from 1733 – 1768. He founded the Portsmouth Grammar School, but we believe was the reason the children at Wymering were unhappy – he did not treat them well. William was displeased we were there, and made himself known to us at every opportunity trying to scare us off.
Other sightings included a black maidservant, whom we later discovered may have been part of the retinue of Queen Emma of the Sandwich Islands, who stayed in Wymering in 1865, an unidentified man who crossed the lawn below the window in the master bedroom, a small brown dog, a lady dressed in lavender in the music room with a man who seemed to be her husband, and several children. We also heard piano notes being played, and the sound of bedsprings in the master bedroom.
We were asked by the owner of Wymering to stand in a specific place near the door to the chapel, and see what we could pick up. Jay correctly identified that bodies had been buried beneath the floor there, and that the bones had been excavated and laid out in rows to match up the bodies. In the 1970s the skeletons of several children were found in this place – it is unknown where they originated from, but it is possible they may be deaths from the time that the Manor was used as a church run orphanage.
Wayne did well with names on this investigations, amongst others, being given the names of Wait or White (the Waytes were in residence from 1391-1570).
We loved Wymering – it is full of energy and buzzing with spirit, and we cant wait to return early next year. The Angel Spiritualist Centre would like to thank Alan for allowing us access to this fantastic venue, and for staying up all night on the end of a mobile to verify our excited findings!
