The Open Arms Spiritual Haven in Grays was robbed after donating all their funds to local charities on Sunday the 21st February. Over 75 visitors saw the Haven donate a thousand pounds to local mental health and rape crisis centres, a result of their hard work raising money over recent weeks through their evenings of mediumship at Belmont Hall in Grays. Only a few minutes after the organisers left the hall for the night, youths broke into the premises and vandalised the Haven's storage, stealing raffle prizes and other small items.
Haven organiser, Jay Gage, said 'Im devastated - it seems so unfair that we should give all our money away to do good in the community, and that very same evening, we are repaid in this way. The value of the items taken is small - we dont keep anything of any real worth at the hall - but the damage to our storage will be expensive to repair - at a time when we no longer have any money!'
Police attended the scene, and it is understood that they may have a potential suspect for the crime, but Haven organisers are left in a position of having to fundraise to buy raffle prizes to replace those stolen, and to cover repairs, rather than for the charities they support. Local businesses are encouraged if possible to make a donation, however small, of goods that can be raffled by the Haven, and anyone wishing to help can contact Jay Gage on 07908 632092 or should visit the Haven's website at www.open-arms-haven for more information.
